Infectious diseases research is in the scope of all programmes listed below and is exclusively covered by the programs indicated in bold characters.

European funding programmes in biomedical sciences

Fellowships from the Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions

Scope: The Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions support research training and career development focused on innovation skills. The programme funds worldwide and cross-sector mobility that implements excellent research in any field.

Research grants from the ERC

Scope: The ERC encourages proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries, pioneering ideas that address new and emerging fields and applications that introduce unconventional, innovative approaches.

Who can apply: Researchers of any nationality.

European funding programmes in human infectious diseases

Research grants and awards from ESCMID

Scope: The goal of the ESCMID research grants and awards is to help young and excellent investigators to pursue groundbreaking research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.

Who can apply: Young and senior scientists.

Research grants and fellowships from ISID

Scope: The goal of the ISID Research Grants Program is to support and foster the professional development of young investigators from resource-limited countries in the field of human infectious diseases research by helping them to acquire additional skills and data to help advance their careers. The purpose of the SSI/ISID Fellowship Program is to support infectious disease physicians and scientists from developing and middle income countries through multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory training at select biomedical institutions in Switzerland.

Who can apply: Research grant: young investigators from resource-limited countries. Fellowship: citizens or permanent residents of developing countries or Eastern Europe.

National funding programmes that fund collaboration between national and foreign scientists

Mercator Fellowships from DFG

Scope: Mercator Fellowships enable intensive, long-term project-based collaboration between researchers from both domestic and foreign institutions.

Research fellowships and awards from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Scope: the research fellowships and awards from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promote academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany.

Who can apply: Academics of all disciplines from abroad, who are internationally recognised as leaders in their field.

Hungarian Research Fund for international cooperation from OTKA

Scope: The Hungarian Research Fund for international cooperation from OTKA aims at facilitating scientific cooperation between the Hungarian researchers and  foreign partners. Broad spectrum of subjects including infectious diseases.

Who can apply: The Hungarian applicant has to be affiliated with a research institution in Hungary.

Bilateral scientific cooperations of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

Scope: The bilateral scientific cooperations of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences aims at facilitating scientific cooperation between the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) and academic research institutes of the partner countries. Broad spectrum of subjects including infectious diseases.

Who can apply: Reseachers from the partner countries.

German-Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development (GIF)

Scope: GIF's objective is to promote and fund basic and applied scientific research projects for peaceful purposes in both countries conducted jointly by teams of scientists.

United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) 

Scope: The goal of BSF is to promote scientific relations between the U.S. and Israel by supporting collaborative research projects in a wide area of basic and applied scientific fields, for peaceful and non-profit purposes.

International project of scientific cooperation from CNRS

Scope: The aim of the international project of scientific cooperation from the CNRS is to fund collaborative research projects between a French team from the CNRS and a foreign team.

Who can apply: In France: CNRS researchers, as well as academic staff from other institutions who work in CNRS-affiliated units. Outside of France: researchers and academics from research organizations or universities.

Bilateral exchange programs of the CNRS

Scope: The aim of the bilateral exchange programs of the CNRS is to assist researchers in initiating scientific collaboration with a foreign partner. The goal is for researchers to work together on a jointly defined project. During the project,  researchers may visit each other on short-term stays.

Who can apply: In France: CNRS researchers, as well as academic staff from other institutions who work in CNRS-affiliated units. Outside of France: researchers and academics from research organizations or universities

GROW – Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide

Scope: The GROW program aims at promoting research stays of US doctoral candidates at Austrian research institutes. 

Who can apply: GROW is a programme for supporting the international exchange of doctoral candidates from the USA jointly offered by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) and partner organisations worldwide. It offers doctoral candidates who are funded by the NSF in the framework of its Graduate Research Fellows Program (GRFP) to make research stays at scientific institutions in partner countries.

Bilateral scientific cooperations of the Romanian Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation

Scope: The bilateral scientific cooperations of the Romanian Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation aims at facilitating scientific cooperation between RO research organisations and some  partner countries from EU and outside of EU. Broad spectrum of subjects including infectious diseases are covered.

Who can apply: researchers from RO and partner countries.

National funding programmes that fund national scientists to work abroad

Erwin Schrödinger Fellowships 

Scope: The aim of the Erwin Schrödinger Fellowships is to promote scientific work for Austrian researchers at leading foreign research institutions.

Who can apply: The Schrödinger Fellowships support young scientists (age limit 34 years) who are normally based in Austria to work abroad at leading research institutions and on leading research programmes.

Max Kade Foundation Fellowship Programme

Scope: The Fellowship Programme of the non-profit foundation Max Kade, that is under US-American legal guidelines, aims to promote research visits of natural scientists and medical researchers from Germany to the USA through their fellowships. 

Who can apply: The program enables excellently qualified early career researchers in the natural sciences and medicine to apply for a research visit to the USA.

Scope: The travel grants from the Domus project aim to support the research work of Hungarian nationalities living abroad.

National funding programmes that fund scientists from abroad

Grants for foreign students from the French Foundation Infectiopole Sud

Scope: fellowships for students to attend master classes or prepare a PhD, post-doctoral fellowships and positions for professors in the area of Montpellier, Nice, Marseille or Nîmes. 

Who can apply: scientists from abroad.

Foundation Mérieux

Scope: The Foundation Mérieux supports applied research programmes mainly in the field of respiratory infections and multi resistant tuberculosis.

Who can apply: Researchers in developing countries.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award

Scope: The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award allows successful junior researchers to spend five years building up a working group and working on a high-profile, innovative research project of their own choice at a research institution of their own choice in Germany.

Who can apply: The programme is open to scientists from all countries and disciplines who completed their doctorates with disctinction less than six years ago and have published work in prestigious international journals or publishing houses.

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers

Scope: A Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers allows excellent scientists to carry out long-term research (6-24 months) in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host. 

Who can apply: The programme is open to scientists from all countries and disciplines with above average qualifications, who are at the beginning of their academic career and only completed their doctorates in the last four years.

Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers

Scope: A Humboldt Research Fellowship for experienced researchers allows excellent scientists to carry out long-term research (6-18 months) in Germany. Applicants choose their own topic of research and their academic host. 

Who can apply: The programme is open to scientists from all countries and disciplines with above average qualifications, who completed their doctorate less than twelve years ago, already have their own research profile and are working at least at the level of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Group Leader or have a record of several years of independent academic work.

Fellowship Programme in Biomedical Imaging

Scope: The Fellowship Programme in Biomedical Imaging of the Region of Madrid in collaboration with Massachussets Institute of Technology is co-funded by FP7-PEOPLE-2011-COFUND.

Who can apply: Experienced researchers (PhD or > 4 years of FTE research experience). Trans-national mobility: Incoming Fellowships (Madrid); Outgoing Fellowships (Boston and Madrid)

Scope: The aim of the fellowships of the Lise Meitner program is to strengthen the quality and the scientific know-how of the Austrian scientific community

Programme "Hosting high-level researchers" from the French National Research Agency

Scope: The aim of the programme "Hosting high-level researchers" from the French National Research Agency is to enable scientists of any nationality to carry out a research project in a reputed institution in France.

Who can apply: Two researcher profiles: leading world-class scientists whose career is widely recognised across the globe, and young researchers with high potential who can prove a record of excellence on the international scene.

Programme "Research in Paris" from the city of Paris

Scope: The aim of the programme "Research in Paris" is to bring researchers from abroad to scientific laboratories in Paris.

Who can apply: Non-French postdoctoral or senior researchers working abroad.

The Blaise Pascal international research chairs 

Scope: The Blaise Pascal international research chairs aims to attract highly renowned foreign scientists to the Ile-de-France region of France.

Who can apply: World-renowned foreign researchers who would like to be hosted by a research or higher education establishment in the Ile-de-France.

Programme for the Promotion of Talent and Employability from MINECO and ISCIII

Scope: The programme for the promotion of talent and Employability (from the Spain´s Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness [MINECO] and the National Institute of Health Carlos III [ISCIII]) aims to recognize and promote talent in Research, Development and Innovation and the employability of that talent.

Who can apply: Researchers of all nationalities. Depending on subprogramme: Senior Researcher, Junior researcher, PhD recruitment by the private sector, Support for Research Infrastructures of hospitals and IIS.

International programme of the WelcomeTrust

Scope: The International programme of the WelcomeTrust proposes different kind of fundings that aim to support research into all aspects of biomedical science: from molecules and cells vital to life, through the spread of diseases or the vectors of disease across the globe, to clinical and public health research to improve the quality of healthcare.

Who can apply: Researchers from low- and middle-income countries.
