We have been working on the pathogenicity of group A streptococcus (GAS) for many years. We cloned and characterized the fibronectin-binding proteins of GAS, discovered ScpC that cleaves host IL-8 thus preventing neutrophil activation, and recruitment thus enabling GAS dissemination in invasive GAS diseases. Studied the role of monocytes in protection against GAS. Our recent findings are that GAS alters host metabolism for its own benefit and this pathway can be targeted for an efficient treatment. that GAS initiates
