We aim to explore the means used by Streptococcus pneumoniae to cope with the consequences of oxidative stress. Specifically, we focus on the involvement of thiol peroxidase (TpxD) in the bacterial defense mechanisms against H2O2. Our data suggest that S. pneumoniae TpxD exhibits two functions associated with H2O2 reduction: (i) it transmits oxidative signals to upstream effectors, such as transcription factors and signaling and regulatory molecules, and (ii) it provides antioxidant defense by direct reduction of H2O2.
An additional active area of research is the molecular epidemiology of S. pneumoniae before and after the introduction of the 7- and 13- valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.
